When the first BMW 1 Series was presented to the motoring press in Munich in the summer of 2004, it was criticised as being too small and too cramped, especially in the rear compartment. Some critics also found that it didn't drive with the flair one expected from BMW. Nonetheless, that first generation went on to sell over two million models in its seven-year existence.
