More than one million visitors (1,071,193) visited the four sites of the National Museum of Ireland in 2012.
It's the second consecutive year for visitors to top 1 million, even though the overall figure was down by 2 per cent.
Extensive and varied public programming helped but the museums said free admission was also a key factor given the current economic climate.
