The Chief Justice has issued an unprecedented warning to the government on its proposals for a constitutional referendum which would allow it to cut the pay of judges.

In a memorandum sent to the Taoiseach and the government last week, which has been seen by The Sunday Business Post, Chief Justice John Murray said that the proposed referendum to cut judges’ pay was ‘‘fundamentally deficient and would compromise the substance of judicial independence’’....
