There will be much pomp and ceremony in Berlin this weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of the European Union.

It came into being when the Treaty of Rome was signed, thereby creating the European Economic Community (EEC).And there is plenty to celebrate.

Founded after a war which tore the continent apart, the EU has overseen what has been - with some terrible exceptions - a generally peaceful period in the continent’s history. Democracy has spread more widely than even its founders could have dreamed.
