There is intense local speculation that exploratory discussions have taken place with private investment groups about the possibility of the government selling an equity stake in Shannon Airport.

Assets owned or controlled by state body Shannon Development adjacent to the airport could also be part of any future deal, sources close to the airport believe.

The speculation revolves around two private sector groups.
