Mounting concern for Eye and Ear Hospital

Warning plans to merge services will be emotive

Concern is mounting in medical circles that the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital could close.

Plans being advanced by the health service include one to amalgamate eye (ophthamology) services on the site of the Mater Hospital. An exploratory meeting of doctors has been scheduled for later this month. In correspondence sent to doctors, one hospital consultant warned it would be ''a thorny, emotive issue.
