UK infant products retailer Mothercare has rejected a takeover bid worth about £266 million from a North American retail chain, Destination Maternity.

The American company, which is the world’s largest designer and retailer of maternity products has failed in its effort to engage the Mothercare board in takeover talks.

Mothercare said in 2012 that it planned to close 111 British outlets over three years as it moved to a more profitable core of 200 stores.
