The state’s €77 million scheme to support struggling mortgage holders is to be examined by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, in a bid to close potential loopholes and guard against its abuse.

The state’s €77 million scheme to support struggling mortgage holders is to be examined by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, in a bid to close potential loopholes and guard against its abuse.

The minister has asked her officials to examine the mortgage interest supplement scheme extended to 18,465 households because of concern in the banking sector that payments made directly to individuals may not be used for paying the loan.
