Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said Europe must boost the credibility of efforts to control public finances and protect the euro.

“We shared our common desire to see the credibility of the mechanisms that govern the euro strengthened, and the availability of instruments to confront a difficult situation in the markets,” Monti said at a press conference in Rome after meeting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
