Monnet talks – or does he?

Once again, a letter (Matt Halpin, letters, SBP,10/8/2008) to an Irish newspaper reproduces an oft-cited ‘‘quotation’’, intended to demonstrate duplicity by that mythical creature ‘‘the EU elite’’, and attributes it to Jean Monnet.

Once again, a letter (Matt Halpin, letters, SBP,10/8/2008) to an Irish newspaper reproduces an oft-cited ‘‘quotation’’, intended to demonstrate duplicity by that mythical creature ‘‘the EU elite’’, and attributes it to Jean Monnet.

In reality, the ‘‘quote’’ in question is a paraphrasing of British Conservative Party politician Adrian Hilton’s interpretation (from a book published in 1997), of Monnet’s intentions. So it is, in fact, a third-hand distortion:...
