New rules to protect online consumers

Friday saw new rules introduced offering increased protection for European online shoppers. The new consumer rights directive replaces a 1997 directive on distance contracts, according to the European Consumer Centre (ECC).

Figures from the ECC indicated that Irish consumers alone will spend up to €12.7 billion online by 2020. The new directive introduces better cancellation rights, by extending an existing cooling-off period for online purchases. The directive also introduces rights...
