Joan Burton, Minister for Social Protection: payments under the exceptional needs payment scheme were reduced from €62.6 million in 2011 to €36.7 million last year.

The government came under fire last week for reducing the amount it spends on families in need.

According to Fianna Fáil’s spokesman on social protection, Willie O’Dea, the Department for Social Protection has slashed funding for its exceptional needs payment.
