Politicians in Ireland constantly speak of the ''educated'' and ''sophisticated'' electorate, but I have come to the conclusion that the majority don't believe it. Politics, electioneering and ultimately democracy in Ireland have been reduced to simplistic slogans and soundbites, carefully prepared by spin doctors in response to focus groups and opinion poll findings. Character and conviction have been lost to our political system.
