A decade ago, when 2G delivered data speeds that crawled along at kilobytes rather than megabytes, it was only commission-fuelled road warriors that had the patience to seriously explore mobile working.

Plugging handsets into a laptop for rudimentary tasks was as good as it got, and poor coverage ensured that anything you sent over the network went on a wing and a prayer.
