Mitsubishi redefines the hybrid

Mitsubishi's new Outlander PHEV looks normal, but it's nothing short of revolutionary underneath, writes Paul Healy.

The Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle): offers a special operating mode for times when electric power will be inefficient.

What is a hybrid? Webster's dictionary defines it as ''an animal or plant that is produced from two animals or plants of different kinds. However, in the car world, we have a much easier definition. It's a vehicle with two forms of propulsion that, since the arrival of cars like the Toyota Prius and Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, means an engine backed up by an electric motor.
