Eamon Ryan, the Minister for Communications, in tends to give more powers to Regtel, the premium telephone regulator.

Ryan said that Regtel’s current powers lacked sufficient ‘‘bite’’ to deter rogue service providers from breaking the regulator’s code of practice.

Last year,112 million calls and text messages were made to premium rate lines, which offer services including ringtones, mobile ‘wallpaper’ graphics, competitions and horoscope services.
