Metropolis: The word on the street

English designer Henry Holland broke into the mainstream through a combination of great design and clever plays on words, a formula that has served him spectacularly well, writes Lisa Brady.

Henry Holland has a way with words. In 2006, the now 29-year-old blogger from Ramsbottom, near Manchester, created an iconic moment in pop culture, and the establishment of a successful design house - almost with words alone.

The words in question were those that appeared on his Fashion Groupies logo T-shirts, a kind of 'what if' project that catapulted him into the fashion spotlight. The 1980s-inspired monochrome tees were emblazoned with cheeky catchphrases championing Holland's peers,...
