The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said that European leaders’ decision to sign up to a "fiscal compact" - which is explained here - without Britain was justified to save the euro.

"We did what’s right and important for the euro," she said to reporters in Brussels today.

Meanwhile, shares have rise across Europe as markets react to the outcome of the EU Summit in Brussels.
