Merck in the dock

Almost 5,000 people have lodged negligence claims against Merck, accusing the pharmaceutical giant of deliberately withholding information from regulators about the potentially fatal side-effects of Vioxx and of misleading doctors.

Almost 5,000 people have lodged negligence claims against Merck, accusing the pharmaceutical giant of deliberately withholding information from regulators about the potentially fatal side-effects of Vioxx and of misleading doctors.

A spokeswoman for Merck Sharp & Dohme Ireland (Human Health) said the company was aware of reports of claimants in Ireland. She said Merck intended to fight these cases and added that the pharmaceutical company believed it had acted responsibly.
