Mental health professionals sceptical of programme plans

The descriptions are Dickensian. ‘‘Forgotten and neglected’’, living ‘‘cold, empty, colourless lives’’, in ‘‘19th-century buildings unfit for purpose’’. Buildings that are ‘‘dilapidated, desolate and depressing’’. But the subject is not fiction, neither is it in the past.

These are descriptions of mental health institutions in present-day Ireland, as they appear in reports by the Inspector of Mental Health Services.
