Tragedy is a profitable media commodity

Madeleine McCann’s father told a British parliamentary committee on privacy last week that he felt newspapers had profited from his daughter’s disappearance by devoting acres of space to irrelevant detail. She had been a ‘‘commodity’’, he said.

It’s impossible to raise this issue and not refer to Jade Goody who, at the time of writing, appears to be close to death.
