An unfortunate press release arrived in from drinks industry group DIGI last week, headlined (in capital letters) ‘Thousands of jobs at risk as alcohol consumption falls to 1997 levels’.
The release went on to tell us that there had been a 6 per cent decline in alcohol consumption in 2008, and to call on the government to take measures to help the drinks industry survive.
The industry, it said, was ‘‘jeopardised by current trends’’....
