Twenty-three years ago, I was an enthusiast for press freedom. I favoured a press regime here similar to that in the US, where journalists could write (almost) anything they wished about anybody with impunity; where journalists were free to write what they liked about ongoing court cases; and where the protection of journalists’ sources was absolute, or almost so.

If we had such a regime here, I believed, we might be able to topple...
