David McWilliams’s outline of how Vat and vehicle registration tax (VRT) work in Ireland (17/2/08) was obviously constructed to support his views about Ireland and the EU, but it was neither balanced nor accurate.
First, Irish people can go to any country in Europe to buy a car, and many of them do so. Secondly, Vat is an EU-wide tax regime and, although rates differ, the rules are consistent across all member states.
