McIlroy should be free to choose his flag

Unlike previous Northern sportsmen, Rory McIlroy is free to choose whose flag he will represent at the Rio Olympics, writes Tom McGurk.

Sport in the North was itself part of the wider identity and tribal crisis of the old state.

I was amused last week by Pat Hickey's attempt to get Rory McIlroy to declare for Ireland at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Ireland's Olympic chief said that if McIlroy declared for Ireland, he would be honoured by being asked to carry the tricolour at the head of the team at the opening ceremony.
