Tom McGurk is quite wrong to suggest (20/4/08) that, when Enoch Powell spoke in 1968, Britain had an ‘‘unrestricted immigration policy’’.

In fact, that policy - which had only existed for citizens of Commonwealth countries - was ended six years previously by the Commonwealth Immigrants Act.
