When Martin McGuinness called dissident republican killers ‘traitors’, he shut for ever the book of the Provisional IRA.

I suspect that, for the people of the North, the sense of relief is palpable this weekend. The frail political construct so many laboured for so long to build has somehow survived. And now, like the survivors of some near miss, they are taking in the view with gratitude and relief.
