Labour was on course to gain a seat in Ireland East as Nessa Childers, daughter of the late president, Erskine Childers, and a former Green Party councillor, polled strongly. There were indications that Fine Gael could yet cause an upset by retaining its two seats, but Fianna Fáil was confident that outgoing MEP Liam Aylward would survive.
