McDonald may run for Sinn Féin leadership if Adams retires

The deputy leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, has told this newspaper she will consider a bid for the leadership of the party when the current leader Gerry Adams retires.

The deputy leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, will consider a bid for the leadership of the party when the current leader Gerry Adams retires.

In an interview with this newspaper, McDonald said that Adams was still the second most popular party leader in the country, and insisted that there was no vacancy at present. But she said she would be interested when Adams does decide to step down.
