An Irish banking delegation met Charlie McCreevy last week to lobby against a major EU banking plan, which they believe would deepen the current financial crisis.

It has been a horrendous few weeks for Europe’s financial institutions, with panic in world markets depressing their share value, and inter-bank lending coming to a sudden and screeching halt.

Those financial institutions now fear that a new proposal from the European Commission could trigger yet more...
