Ancient Light

"Billy Gray was my best friend and I fell in love with his mother." So begins Ancient Light, with John Banville's ensnaring opening sentence typically encapsulating the novel's core. Central though it is, however, the affair between Alexander Cleave and his childhood friend's mother is just one part of this memory-driven story, which moves between the past and the present as its narrator reconstructs some of his life's most formative episodes.
