The frontrunner for the chair at the US Federal Reserve, Larry Summers, dropped out of contention for the job last week, leaving the way clear for rival Janet Yellen to take over from Ben Bernanke in the coming months. Summers, who served as a White House economic adviser, faced an uphill battle for approval from congressional Democrats, who preferred Yellen.
