Mario Monti succeeds Berlusconi

UPDATE: Former European Commissioner Mario Monti has accepted a new role replacing Silvio Berlusconi as Italy's prime minister and will be finance minister as well.

Mario Monti, the former European Commissioner, is set to formally take over as Italy's new prime minister within hours.

In a new conference announcing his new cabinet, Monti said he would also serve as the finance minister of the new Italian government.

The news sent Italian ten year bond yields back down below the seven per cent threshold deemed dangerous.
