Retail sales have dropped one per cent in March year-on-year but they were 0.2 per cent up on last month.
Motor trading and bars were behind most of the increase, the Central Statistics Office said.
Retail Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the retail sector, said the figures for March showed a welcome increase but said they were disappointing compared to last year.
