As a consequence of its embattled past, most people know of Montenegro as part of the entity now known as Serbia-Montenegro, part of the former Yugoslavia.
In 2002, Serbia and Montenegro began negotiations to relax their relationship. As a result, there is now merely a “loose federation'‘ between the states. A referendum is due in Montenegro next year, with most of the indicators pointing to a complete separation of the two countries.
