Contrary to the Peter Principle, you do not have to be promoted to reach the level of your incompetence.

If organisation structures lag behind strategy, as I wrote last week, then capability lags behind structure. Capability can be defined as the range of management knowledge, energy, experience and creativity available at any given time for present and future tasks.

Business experts Gary Hamel and CK Prahalad said that when you conceive of a company as a portfolio of competencies, a whole new range of potential opportunities opens up.
