Relief for hard-pressed homeowners trying to tackle excessively high mortgage costs now exists in the form of the Central Bank's Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears (CCMA).

This sets out the framework that lenders must use when dealing with borrowers in mortgage difficulties.

Under the code, lenders are required to handle all cases sympathetically and positively and must aim to help people meet their mortgage obligations.
