Make friends with the IMF, says Iceland

Steingrímur Sigfússon, Iceland’s finance minister, tells Pat Leahy that if Ireland can gain the IMF’s trust again, the road ahead will be a little less bumpy

Be prepared to be unpopular. Gain the IMF’s trust and then work with them. Keep your promises. Be realistic about your own situation and be straight with people. And, above all, forget about the politics.

This was the advice of Steingrímur Sigfússon, Iceland’s minister for finance, who addressed a meeting in Trinity College Dublin recently.
