The decision of Financial Regulator Patrick Neary to resign at the end of this month came amid conflicting claims on whether he had been informed of the controversial loans worth €87 million to directors at Anglo Irish Bank last January.

Following the controversy, a major shake-up of the financial regulatory structure is now due to be announced by Brian Lenihan, the Minister for Finance, within weeks. Lenihan has indicated that he will take the lead...
