No penalty when switching health insurance, says HIA

Switching health insurance carries no penalty.

The Health Insurance Authority (HIA) has reminded consumers that they can switch health insurance plan or provider without penalty, irrespective of their age or medical status.

Liam Sloyan, chief executive of the HIA, said he wanted to address confusion about penalties for changing health insurance provider. ‘‘We have noticed this issue arising on our helpline,” Sloyan said. ‘‘It is a common misconception, particularly among older people....
