UPDATE: A reform package for the local government system will see the number of councillors reduced by 42 per cent and overall savings of €420 million, the government said.

A reform package for the local government system will see the number of councillors reduced by 42 per cent and overall savings of €420 million, the government has said.

Council seats will be reduced from 1,627 to no more than 950. The reform package launched this afternoon will also see councils reduced from 114 to 31.
