The number of repossessions carried out by local authorities soared last year, and was almost on par with the total number of repossessions for the previous five years, according to new figures from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.

The 34 local authorities nationwide are permitted to grant mortgage finance, and if the borrower defaults on a local authority loan, the local authority can begin repossession proceedings on the loan property.
