Warren Gatland, all week the target of ferocious criticism for his surprise decision to drop Ireland star Brian O'Driscoll for the British and Irish Lions' final test against Australia, was vindicated in stunning fashion yesterday when his team thrashed their hosts 41-16 at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

The win gave the Lions their first series victory since 1997 in South Africa. It was achieved in style, with Australia being outscored by four tries to one.
