Over the past three to four years CFDs have become popular in the Irish market, with estimates that CFD-related transactions account for between 25 per cent and 50 per cent of daily stock exchange turnover.

Martin Kane, director of trading with Goodbody Stockbrokers said: ‘‘They are a way of buying shares using borrowed funds. There’s no more real mystique associated with them.”
