Debt-for-equity swaps
David Hall's opinion piece of September 8 is typical of much recent commentary in failing to acknowledge the wider consequences for society of proposed solutions to the problem of mortgage arrears. Hall proposes debt-for-equity swaps as the new panacea, but ignores the fact that this is not a feasible option for most of those in arrears.
It is telling that Hall had to use an example that also required a mortgage writedown to illustrate...
