Historian Diarmaid Ferriter’s article on the dearth of women in Irish public life (13/3/11) is facile and ill-conceived.

Irish political culture is indeed archaic and deeply inequitable, but not just for women. How many men from working-class backgrounds are represented in the Dáil or Seanad? The Dáil is fundamentally a forum for the advantages of the Irish middle class, property magnates and big farmers.
