Vincent Browne’s rant about Limerick’s woes (21/2/10) called to mind a daily newspaper columnist who, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, used to claim that the increase in crime more or less mirrored the rise in unemployment.

Strangely enough, he offered no explanation as to why the crime rate kept going up when the jobless rate was plunging.
