Property owners who refuse to pay the household charge could be liable for thousands of euro in local authority legal costs, according to the Department of Environment.

Property owners who refuse to pay the household charge could be liable for thousands of euro in local authority legal costs, according to the Department of Environment.

A spokesman for Minister for the Environmenr Phil Hogan's department said the legislation establishing the interim charge allowed the courts to order any person convicted of an offence under the act to "pay the relevant local authority's costs and expenses".
