Watching the recent bunfight between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael over state board appointments is a bit like watching one of those 1950s movies about people being replaced by exact alien copies.

Fine Gaelers, long-time critics of crony appointments, suddenly start staring glass-eyed into cameras and using phrase like “appropriate” and “fully in compliance” when talking about appointing someone’s cousin to the National Knee Safety Assessment Board.
