Land lovers

Farming may not be the most glamorous of occupations, but a growing number of young people are opting for a career on the land, writes Alex Meehan.

Agricultural colleges are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, with most operating at capacity and reporting demand for places that they don't have to offer. Meanwhile, Ireland's farmers are getting older. Figures from the Department of Agriculture from 2010 showed that just 5 per cent, or 6,228 farmers, under 35 were in receipt of a single farm payment. At the same time, the Department of Agriculture found that 28 per cent, or 33,527 farmers, were over the age of 65.
